Brooks Koepka emerged as a man among boys in this year’s major championships. The burly 28-year-old Floridian, who won his second consecutive U.S. Open in June after missing the early part of the season (including the year’s first major at Augusta) with a wrist injury, won the 100th PGA Championship at brawny Bellerive County Club on Saturday. Starting the final round with a two-stroke lead, he held off a Sunday charge by Tiger Woods and a push from resurgent Adam Scott with a closing 66.

With his 16-under-par 264 total, Koepka set a new 72-hole PGA Championship scoring record, eclipsing the 265 total David Toms posted in 2001. Along the way, he matched the PGA’s 18-hole scoring record with his second-round 63. Perhaps most notably, he joined Gene Sarazan, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Woods as winners of the U.S. Open and PGA Championship in the same year.

With his second major title of the season, Koepka staked an ironclad player-of-the-year claim. But even with his bulletproof play in Missouri, people no doubt will be talking more about Woods and his near miss.

Despite not hitting a fairway on the front nine Sunday, Woods turned in 32 and climbed to within a shot of the lead after making birdies at. Now. 12 and 13. But his momentum stalled with a bogey at 14, where he lipped out a par putt. Birdies at 15 and 18 gave Woods a 64, equaling the day’s low round, and a runner-up finish, two stroked behind Koepka.

Scott, who entered the championship with only one top-10 finish this season, played in Sunday’s final twosome with Koepka and shared the lead with his playing partner midway through the final nine before bogeying the last for a 67. Scott finished third, a shot behind Woods.

The runner-up finish was Woods’ seventh in a major, to go along with his 14 victories. And coming on the heels of his T6 finish at the Open Championship last month, it all but guaranteed that U.S. captain Jim Furyk will make Woods one of his four captain’s picks for next month’s Ryder Cup in Paris.

Meanwhile, the eight automatic qualifiers for Furyk’s squad were finalized Sunday night: Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reid, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson.
