According to officials at TaylorMade Golf, Jason Day came to them last fall with a request for a putter similar in style to the Itsy Bitsy Spider prototype he had used to win the 2015 PGA Championship. But he wanted one that incorporated the color red because that is a favorite hue of his.
So company technicians began working with the Aussie to find the shade that he liked best. Once that was determined, they built a pair of putter models to Day’s specifications. One was dubbed Spider Limited and featured a black frame with red bumpers, and the other, called Spider Limited Red, boasted that color throughout.
It was the Spider Limited Red that Day put into play at the RBC Heritage in mid-April, just after The Masters. And it was that club that he used to win the Players Championship a month later.
Now, TaylorMade is making those flat sticks available to the general golfing public. The combination of a 304 stainless steel frame and a lightweight 6061 aluminum body enables engineers to position weight at the extremities, bolstering stability and forgiveness, while a milled aluminum insert is included to promote a better roll.
