April 22, 2018 – Andrew Landry – Valero Texas Open

By staff and wire reports at Global Golf Post

Andrew Landry flirted with his first PGA Tour victory before losing a playoff to Jon Rahm at the CareerBuilder Challenge in January.

But playing in his home state, the 30-year-old Landry changed his career with a two-stroke victory ahead of Trey Mullinax and Sean O’Hair.

“We were trying to get to the Tour Championship this year, that’s my goal still,” Landry said. “There’s a lot of work still to do but this definitely helped.”

Until this year, Landry’s most significant time on the big stage came in 2016 when he shot 66 to lead the weather-delayed U.S. Open at Oakmont, eventually finishing T15.

The two-time winner on the Web.com Tour had shown little recent form before this breakthrough victory in San Antonio. After his near-miss at the CareerBuilder Challenge, Landry missed four consecutive cuts before finishing T42 at the RBC Heritage.

As it turned out, Landry was waiting to become a father for the first time. His wife, Elizabeth, gave birth to their son, Brooks, on March 20.

“I think a lot of it had to do with my wife was at home and we’re expecting our first child, so it was a lot of just kind of waiting around,” Landry said. “I don’t think that I was playing that bad, especially (on the) West Coast.

“It wasn’t like I’ve been playing bad golf, I think I had a lot on my mind. Now that the baby’s here and everybody’s healthy and everybody’s good, I think I can just go out and pin my ears back and play some golf.”

Mullinax, chasing his first PGA Tour victory, rushed into contention when he shot a course-record 62 on Saturday. He made a critical mistake on the drivable par-4 17th hole Sunday when he chunked a short pitch shot into a greenside bunker, leading to a bogey that allowed Landry to take a two-stroke lead to the 72nd hole.

Jimmy Walker, who shot 67 Sunday, finished fourth.
