Bryson DeChambeau Wins Northern Trust Open

By Staff and Wire Reports of Global Golf Post

For all of the equations and analysis that go into Bryson DeChambeau’s golf game, there is a simple reality: When he plays like he did at the Northern Trust, he’s extremely difficult to beat.

Intent on securing a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, DeChambeau dominated the weekend at Ridgewood to roll into his sconed PGA Tour victory this season, adding to his earlier win at the Memorial Tournament.

“Whatever happens happens. I’m going to try to play my best next week and see what happens after that,” said DeChambeau, who leads the FedEx Cup playoffs going to the Dell Technologies Championship.

DeChambeau does it his own way, with his single-length irons and wedges and his detailed scientific approach to everything from the physics of his swing to determining whether the golf balls he uses are properly balanced. It works for him.

In Saturday’s third round, when many of the game’s top players were struggling to generate positive momentum, DeChambeau shot 63 to build a four-stroke lead. He birdied his last two holes in the third round and it forced someone to chase him down on Sunday.

No one could.

“Bryson was extremely tough to catch. He didn’t really open a window for us,” runner-up Tony Finau said.

Aaron Wise made a Sunday run at DeChambeau, briefly cutting a five-stroke lead to two but it was short-lived. Wise made consecutive bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17 to fall away and DeChambeau went about clinically dissecting Ridgewood, keeping himself safely in front while others jockeyed for position behind him.

“To be able to hold the lead and keep the lead the whole time, it was getting a little tight out there and to make some putts when I needed to was great,” DeChambeau said.
