December 3, 2017 – Rickie Fowler – Hero World Challenge

Talk about going out with a bang. Rickie Fowler put a spectacular stamp on the final PGA Tour event of the calendar year by shredding Albany Golf Club while flirting with the magical 59 target.

KingF8Fowler had a very good 2016-17 season, winning once while finishing second twice and third twice. In his only previous start in the new wraparound season, Fowler finished second at the OHL Mayakoba before steamrolling the 18-player field in the unofficial event at Albany.

He tinkered with the clubs in his bag, going with three woods last week, and he has talked about relaxing before the new year rolls around but Fowler’s strong play hasn’t wavered.

When the season resumes in January at Kapalua, Fowler will arrive with great expectations for 2018.

In a game where there’s no such thing as perfection, Fowler came pretty close on the front nine Sunday, making eight birdies while shooting 28.

“I was trying to stay as calm as possible and stay in the moment, not getting ahead of myself,” Fowler said of his torrid start. “Seven (consecutive birdies) was the most I’d made before. I was really trying to get the eight.” Fowler leapfrogged third-round leader Charley Hoffman and had the chance with a late run to shoot 59. Fowler didn’t quite get that deep but he sucked any potential drama out of the finish long before the final groups reached the 18th hole.

KingF83W“I knew I needed to get off to a quick start to at least show Charley I was there,” Fowler said. “We took care of that.”

If it’s true that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, Hoffman was on the wrong end of that equation. He started the final round with a five-stroke lead and got nothing going, shooting 72 on Sunday.

Then there was Tiger Woods, who played his first tournament in 10 months and put together rounds of 69-68-75-68 to finish tied for ninth.
