Vegas Snaps Slump with Repeat in Canada

By: Global Golf Post

The win by Jhonattan Vegas is one more example of the strange way golf sometimes works. Vegas arrived at Glen Abbey Golf Club having missed the cut in his past five starts and having made the weekend just once in his past eight events.

In a flash however, everything changed.

“It’s incredible. It doesn’t get any better,” Vegas said after closing with a 65 and defeating Charley Hoffman with a birdie on the first playoff hole, Glen Abbey’s 18th. “Five missed cuts. Not playing good golf. A little change this week and it was magic.”

Vegas said an adjustment in his equipment made a difference and he rolled that into a victory that likely will catapult him onto the International Presidents Cup team.

In the playoff with Hoffman, both players hit their tee shots into fairway bunkers on the reachable par-5. Hoffman could not reach the green with his second and played short while Vegas ripped an 8-iron from 181 yards that clipped the top of the bunker lip before finishing hole high in the left fringe.

“I knew that if I got it up in the air there was enough wind to get the ball close to the green. I said, ‘Just stay aggressive,'” Vegas said.

Hoffman bunkered his third and after Vegas left his third shot within tap-in range, Hoffman was unable to hole his bunker shot to extend the playoff.

“I gave myself a chance. It didn’t turn out the way I wanted,” Hoffman said after his second runner-up finish and fifth top-five finish this season.

Ian Poulter closed with rush, shooting 64 on Sunday to finish third, posting 20-under par while Hoffman and Vegas were still on the course.

“There ‘s life in the old god yet,” Poulter said.
