Major Champ Inspired New Cameron Model

Futura5.5M(2)By John Steinbreder of Global Golf Post

According to Scotty Cameron, the idea for the newest addition to his Futura line, a high moment-of-inertia mallet called the Futura 5.5M, came from 2017 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas.

“It began with a prototype I made after Justin came into my putter studio a year or so ago looking for a smaller mallet he could align easily but one that also promoted the arced putting stroke he prefers,” said Cameron, who has been making plat sticks for Titleist since 1994. “We welded a flare neck to a Furuta X5 Tour putter and sent him on his way. He went on to win three PGA Tour events, reporting back that some of his buddies wanted a putter just like his. The wheels started turning from there.

Futura5.5M(3)“In addition to Justin’s visit, I had also received requests for a small version of the Futura
7M,” Cameron explained. “So, in thinking about this new entry in the world of mallet putters, I was able to blend my MOI and toe flow thoughts into this model, the Futura 5.5M.”

The Futura 5.5M features a compact mallet that is about 10 percent smaller than the similarly shaped Futura 7M and uses a shorter, single-bend shaft configuration for additional toe hang, which helps golfers produce a more flowing stroke. The head is constructed of lightweight 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum and precision-milled 303 stainless steel, with weight moved back and the perimeter for great forgiveness and less twisting during the stroke. Heel-and-toe weighting is also employed in an effort to further bolster stability and forgiveness.
