D.A. Points visited the winner’s circle for the first time since the 2013 Shell Houston Open, capturing the Puerto Rico Open on Sunday.
Points, who started in the final round one shot back of 54-hole leader Chris Stroud, shot 6-under 66 at the 7,506-yard Coco Beach Golf and Country Club. His final round started with five consecutive birdies before he made bogeys on two of his next three holes. He then steadied himself and closed with four birdies in his last six holes to win his third PGA Tour title.
“I can’t even begin to explain what this means,” Points said. “(I had a) couple really awful years, I pretty much hit rock bottom. Put my family through a lot. To be able to find the strength and courage to stay calm and win is something I didn’t know I had in me.”
Points’ victory does not get him into The Masters because the Puerto Rico Open is held the same week as a World Golf Championship event, but he does earn a two-year PGA Tour exemption and berths in the PGA Championship and the Players Championship.
Retief Goosen shot 8-under 64 to grab the clubhouse lead for a time, but he ultimately finished in a tie for second with Bryson DeChambeau (final-round 67) and Bill Lunde (68) at 18 under. Rounding out the top five, another shot back, were Sam Saunders (65), Peter Uihlein (66) and Whee Kim (68).
