Van’s Golf Shops takes over retail operation at Valley Golf Center

A venerable golf retail shop and learning facility in west Phoenix now carries a legendary new name. In mid-March, Van’s Golf Shops took over the retail shop at Valley Golf Center. In so doing, Van’s launched an exciting new vision for expanding and upgrading an already acclaimed establishment.

The original retail store opened in 1971 and founders Kevin O’Connell and Bill Cornelius called it Kachina Fairways. Later it became Nevada Bob’s and most recently, Valley Golf Center. What’s unique about this 11,000-square-foot store in Avondale is that it is the only Van’s location that is attached to a driving range – the Valley Golf Center.

The range is a double-decker layout with several Top Tracer bays available. The facility also features a putting course that is a replica of the back nine at Augusta National. According to Pete Mosher, Regional Manager for Van’s Golf Shops, the facility will introduce a monthly putting tournament sponsored by Van’s.

Other popular options at the newly rebranded retail store is a spot on the range that features grass practice areas, a short-game area with a practice bunker and lessons, and extensive fittings that are available through the pro shop. Inside the store is the largest clothing collection in the region, specifically for ladies. The apparel department encompasses about half the total square footage of the store and there is always staff available to assist shoppers with their clothing purchases.

In just two short months, the switch to Van’s has been extremely well-received.

“The response from many golfers in the area to Van’s taking over the retail operation has been very positive,” says Mosher. “We will maintain the phenomenal clothing selection and will build the other areas of the store to continue to be the ‘go to’ location for golf equipment and apparel on the west side of Phoenix.”

Another tweak or two is in the works to further elevate Van’s at Valley Golf Center.
“Sometime this summer, we will undergo a remodel to improve the look of the store and build upon the customer experience in hard-goods shopping,” says Mosher.
