November 19, 2017 – Austin Cook – RSM Classic

By Staff and Wire Reports at Global Golf Post

It hasn’t taken Austin Cook long to make himself comfortable on the PGA Tour.

Look back at the 2015 Shell Houston Open, when the 26-year old Arkansas native dipped his toe into Tour competition and he was just one stroke behind entering the final round in his second career start before finishing T11. It was a hint of things to come even if it took a couple of years.

G400DriverCook spent the weekend at beautiful Sea Island as the player everyone was chasing and he never wavered, winning the RSM Classic despite breezy conditions that created some uncertainty with club selection.

A recent graduate of the Web.com Tour, Cook has made the most of his full-time status on the PGA Tour, having made the cut in his three previous starts this fall before adding his name to the list of first-time winners since the wraparound season began. Ryan Armour, Patrick Cantlay, and Patton Kizzire also picked up their first Tour victories before a six-week holiday break began.

With a three-stroke lead after the third round, Cook admitted he did not sleep well Saturday night, understanding the career-altering possibilities that would accompany his first Tour victory.

G400Fairway“I knew it was going to be a grind until the end with the wind,” Cook said. “When we finally got to No. 15 and 16, those were downwind. I was a little more comfortable. I knew I could just play good golf.”

He never lost the lead on Sunday and made it easier on himself with a late birdie at the par-3 17th hole that pushed his advantage back to three as he headed to the final hole.

“Walking up 18, you always think you can do it but actually coming out here and doing it to get the W is unbelievable,” Cook said.
