The LPGA operations team will surely be hearing from players in the coming weeks. For the second time in as many events (the previous being the controversially shortened Evian Championship), players were on the course in extremely rough conditions. On Sunday, with golf-ball-sized hail peppering Windross Farm Golf Course and wind whipping upwards of 60mph, players fought to stand up and dodged signs that sailed through the wet sky like wounded ducks. Second and third-round leader Belén Mozo yelled at an official, saying the players were like sheep. She later tweeted, “I almost got slammed by a sign and was told to stay where I was … under a tent. Like SHEEP.” Brittany Lincicome, who began the.final round tied for third, tweeted, “This is a freaking joke!” And Paula Creamer, who withdrew on Tuesday with an injury but stayed in New Zealand, tweeted, “This is so bad … Why are these girls out there during these conditions?”
Final-round play was called but not before Henderson, who has slogged through many a harsh day in Canada, took the lead with three birdies in her first five holes. The lead was five shots when play resumed on Monday and stayed that way throughout most of the final 12 wet, cold, miserable holes. Henderson played her final 12 holes even par to win at 17-under 271. Mozo meanwhile closed with a 78 and finished T5.
The country was spectacular and the event was well received. But consecutive events with questionable decisions need to be addressed. The sooner the better, as the tour heads to Asia for the next month and a half.
