Bob Vokey says there are several things that make the new SM7 line of wedges from Titleist better than the popular SM6 he created a couple of years ago. One has to do with the multiple fitting options the master craftsman offers with SM (for Spim Milled) 7, and this line is available in six tour-proven sole grinds – F, S, M, K, L and the new D, which features a high measured bounce. That makes the club a versatile short-game weapon that can work for a wide range of players.

In addition, each new SM7 employs enhanced Progressive Center of Gravity technology. First used in the SM6 and pioneered by Vokey and his R&D team, ut aligns the center of gravity with the impact position of each loft to produce precise distance and trajectory control with an exceptional feel. This version, he says, is even better.

Finally, Vokey cut the Spin Milled grooves in the SM7 at even higher tolerances, so they deliver more spin than the prior generation. At the same time, a proprietary heat treatment is applied to each one to ensure a longer-lasting spin through the life of the wedge.

“One thing I know from working with tour players the last 20-plus years is that they won’t put a new wedge in play unless it is better,” says Vokey. “Every time we come out with a new one, we have to prove it. I cannot tell you how many times over the last couple of years players asked me how I was going to make something better than the SM6. Based on how quickly guys are switching to SM7, we know we have done it.”

Among those who have switched is Jordan Spieth, who has put four SM7’s in his bag (46.10 F, 52.08 F, 56.10 S and 60.04 L). Jimmy Walker, Bill Haas, Webb Simpson, Brian Harmon and Andrew “Beef” Johnston also are playing these days with SM7’s.

These clubs are available in three finishes (Tour Chrome, Brushed Steel, and Jet Black), and golfers can choose from 23 loft, bounce and grind combinations. They also can add a wide range of specifications and personalization options through custom order.
