Package sets are an ideal option for new golfers and those returning to the game

With more and more golfers who are either new to the game or returning to the course after years away, the recent golf boom has introduced a greater number of people to the sport.

It has also resulted in significant demand for new equipment, and among the hottest sellers have been package sets of golf clubs ideal for beginning golfers, players on a budget, or those whose equipment is outdated.

“Not many new golfers want to jump into the deep end with a full set of custom-fit, top-of-the- line clubs,” said Lee Smith, Manager of the Edwin Watts Golf Shops in Corpus Christi, Texas. “With a package set you get everything, it’s all new, and the price is usually within budget.”

Package sets vary in what they offer, with some featuring the maximum allowable 14 clubs. Most include a driver, one or two fairway woods, two or three hybrids, irons, one or two wedges and a putter. Prices can vary from $300 to $1,300, and most manufacturers offer sets for men, women and juniors. The clubs typically fall into the game-improvement category and are ideal for high handicappers, but are durable and can be a terrific option as a starter set.

“The quality of package sets today is really quite good, and a lot better than it was previously,” Smith said.
