You’re standing in the fairway, 85 yards out with a clean lie and a chance to knock one close – but you’re not sure which wedge to pull. Sound familiar? It’s a scenario that comes up often, and at Worldwide Golf, the focus is always on helping players make smarter equipment choices, especially when it comes to wedge lofts. Having the right mix in your bag can make those in-between shots a lot more manageable – and the short game a little less stressful.
So how many wedges should you carry, and which lofts make the most sense for your game? Let’s walk through it.
Start with Your Pitching Wedge
Before you think about what to add, look at what you already have. Most modern pitching wedges are lofted between 43-46 degrees. That’s several degrees stronger than pitching wedges from even a decade ago, which means there’s now a wider loft gap between your PW and your next wedge – unless you fill it.
Fill the Gap with a Gap Wedge
A gap wedge – sometimes labeled as an “A” or “approach” wedge – typically ranges from 48–52 degrees. It’s designed to give you a smooth transition from your pitching wedge to your sand wedge, eliminating awkward half-swings or overly soft shots.
If your PW is 44°, look for a gap wedge around 48°. If your PW is 46°, something in the 50° range can work. You’re aiming for about 4–6 degrees between wedges to maintain consistent distance gapping.
Sand Wedge: Not Just for the Bunker
Most sand wedges fall between 54° and 56° of loft and are versatile enough for chips, pitches, and – yes – the occasional bunker save.
This is where sole grind and bounce start to matter more, depending on how you play and the turf you face. But in terms of loft, a 54° or 56° wedge gives you the stopping power you need on shorter approach shots and green-side finesse.
Lob Wedge: For the High, Soft Stuff
Lob wedges range from 58° to 60°, sometimes creeping up to 62° for specialty shots. Not every player needs one, but if you play firm conditions, tight lies, or courses with elevated greens, a lob wedge gives you options.
Just be honest about your comfort level. A lob wedge can be a great tool, but only if you use it confidently.
Building Your Wedge Setup
Most players benefit from carrying three to four wedges. Here’s a common setup:
• Pitching Wedge: 44°
• Gap Wedge: 48°
• Sand Wedge: 54°
• Lob Wedge: 58°
This setup offers even gapping and gives you a range of yardages from 100 yards and in. The exact lofts may vary depending on your iron set, swing speed, and personal preferences, but that 4–6 degree spacing is the key.
Why Loft Gapping Matters
Loft gapping isn’t about having more clubs – it’s about covering your distances without having to manipulate your swing. When each wedge has a clear purpose, your short game gets a lot simpler.
Want to hit a full shot from 90 yards? You’ve got it. Need a three-quarter swing from 70? You’re covered. Wedges with the right lofts help you hit your yardages, control trajectory, and get more consistent around the green.
