Callaway Introduces the Limited Edition Mack Daddy 4 Tactical Wedges
For some players, the feeling of bombing a powerful drive down the middle of the fairway is the ultimate golf shot, while for others, hitting a putt in the sweet spot and watching it find the bottom of the cup is it. But for many, it’s clipping a pitch shot perfectly with a wedge and watching it hit the green with spin and bite, stopping near the hole for a birdie chance that gets their juices flowing.
In crafting the MD 4 Tactical, Callaway’s R&D team once again teamed up with industry legend Roger Cleveland, with an assist from their stable of Tour pros, including Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia, to push the limits of technology and maximizing spin while staying just within USGA rules.
And this isn’t your typical, run-of-the-mill wedge. Aside from the advanced technological innovations, the MD 4 Tactical has a look you won’t soon forget. But we’ll get to that in a minute. First, let’s explore some of the technical features that make the MD 4 Tactical what Callaway calls its most Tour-validated wedge they’ve ever offered.
When it comes to wedges, it’s all about the spin – knowing and trusting how the ball will react off the clubface as it lands on the green. Callaway’s proprietary Groove-in-Groove technology features a set of main grooves, as well as an additional set of micro-grooves which help grab the ball’s cover and increase spin on a wide variety of short game shots. This combination of grooves offers 84 separate contact points where the club can grab the cover.
Callaway also includes an extra “Nip-It” groove near the leading edge which helps promote additional spin and increased control for all short game shots.
Added Sole Grinds = Extreme Versatility
Statistics vary, but it’s safe to say that at least 50% of your strokes come in the short game – chipping, pitching, putting, and bunker shots. Therefore, versatility is a key when choosing wedges. You want a wedge that can interact with a variety of turfs and conditions, from heavy rough to tight fairway lies and sand.
The S Grind offers a medium-width sole and moderate heel relief which helps keep the leading edge low through impact, crucial for solid contact on open-face shots. Meanwhile, the X Grind offers a narrow, high-bounce sole where the low point is near the front of the clubface, perfect for a steep angle of attack on medium to soft course conditions.
Shape and Feel
Roger Cleveland’s extensive research and interaction with Tour players lead to a more compact, Tour-inspired shape for the MD 4 Tactical. You’ll discover that the leading edge is a bit straighter, with a tighter radius and slightly more offset, which promotes the ultimate in clean contact and maximum spin.
Callaway also utilized a soft 8620 carbon steel, four weight ports, and milled aluminum medallions, all leading to a remarkable feel through impact.
As mentioned earlier, this isn’t your typical wedge, not only when it comes to the nuts and bolts, but especially in looks. An eye-catching Tactical package includes an ultra-cool Tactical PVD finish highlighted by a Black PVD face and black medallions. The look intensifies with a premium Black Temper Tour Issue 115 shaft and culminates in a Tactical Lamkin UTX grip with green end caps. This visually striking design is a nod to the men and women of the U.S. armed forces.
And not stopping there, Callaway will also donate a portion of the proceeds from the Mack Daddy 4 Tactical wedges to the Birdies for the Brave foundation, “a national military outreach initiative dedicated to honoring and showing appreciation to the courageous men and women of the United States Armed Forces and their families.”
