New 2023 TaylorMade P790 Irons Review

The new Taylormade P790 irons that we are reviewing

The 2021 Taylormade P790 irons were some of the best on the market, and they seek to do the same with their new 2023 release. The new irons bring several new features and some holdovers that worked well in the previous model.

We got a chance to fit for the new release at Taylormade’s iconic test facility, The Kingdom. Here, we got hands-on experience with the club and got an idea of the feel and features of the new P790s.

To give buyers an idea of how well they compete in today’s market, our 2023 Taylormade P790 irons review will cover the following:

  • Key features
  • Pros and Cons
  • Who do the P790s work best for
  • How to buy them

Let’s dive into each and get a closer look at these clubs.

Key Features

The following are the key features of the new P790s:

FLTD CG Taylormade’s proprietary CG placement technology places the CG lowest in the long irons and progressively higher throughout the set. This improves the launch and playability in the long irons and improves control in scoring clubs.
Individual Mass Optimization Taylormade used AI Mass Optimization technology to design the advanced thick-thin back wall construction, redistributing mass to enhance each club’s performance.
Intelligent Sweet Spot The new face design and internal shaping increase the size of each iron’s sweet spot, making them more forgiving across the board.
Optimal Launch and Forgiveness The forged L-face, Speed Pocket technology, and tungsten weights provide more launch and forgiveness to every iron in the set.

Pros and Cons

Let’s get into what these features bring to the table regarding performance. After getting our hands on these irons in our fitting and getting more familiar after the fact, we have found some pros and cons that buyers should be aware of when considering a purchase.

Pros Cons
Great combination of distance and forgiveness
Still workable despite a greater emphasis on forgiveness for this release
Premium looks, feel, and sound
On the higher end of price point for an irons set
Forgiving for a player’s iron, not necessarily forgiving enough for high-handicappers

Overall, the new Taylormade P790s expand on what the 2021 model brought as an extremely workable and aggressive iron that offers enough forgiveness to make up for a bad day. Every new feature seems to do what they claim, as these irons are noticeably more forgiving than the 2021 model and don’t seem to be sacrificing performance to accomplish this.

Who Should Buy Them?

The Taylormade P790 is designed to meet the needs of mid-low handicap players, and it offers just about everything they need to succeed on the golf course. The price tag also suits this experience level since they start at $1399.99.

While they do offer game-improvement elements, the P790s are not game-improvement irons. Newer players would be better served by an iron designed primarily around forgiveness and higher launch.
