Scott Hamilton started it back in the 2004 Open Championship.

His tool was his Sonartec hybrid.

And the range wasn’t from 200 yards.  It was from short distances.  He was using his hybrid instead of the traditional wedge or iron when chipping.

Since then, the hybrid has morphed into the most versatile club in the bag, and very effective from close distances around the green.
