How to Play a Shot Against a Right-To-Left Wind

Golf is not always played in calm conditions. Many times, knowing how to adjust to the wind is as important as selecting the right club or reading the correct break on a putt.  In this latest Play Better Golf Segment, Claude Harmon III shows us multiple ways to play a shot against a right-to-left wind.

I’ve got team Titleist member Ryan Chrysler here to help me out. We’re going to talk about wind shots. The wind is going to feel like it’s off the left here and he’s just going to try and do what we call, “ride the wind.” So believe it or not he’s actually going to play the golf ball a little bit more forward in his stance and then he’s going to close his stance off. Now the reason for that is by playing a little more forward and trying to close his stance in swing left he’s actually going to hit almost what we would call a little bit of kind of a pull fade. Go ahead and do that one, closed stance, ball forward, trying to swing left. So the ball starting very much to the left there and he’s going to try and ride the wind ok? Now the opposite of that would be to try and turn the golf ball back into the wind. So on a wind that’s coming from the left, he’s going to try and hit a little bit more of a draw. So he’s going to move the golf ball back in his stance and then he’s going to try and swing those arms and swing that path out to the right and hit a little bit more of a draw or a little bit of a hook and curve it back into the breeze. Nice and solid. So again not trying to necessarily change your technique to move the golf ball hitting draws and fades. Sometimes it can be just as simple as a little bit of a setup change. Ball a little bit more forward, closed stance, swing left to hit the fade ball back in the stance a little bit open try and get that path out to the right to hit a little bit more of a draw, if you can just work on trying to change your setup and think logically about the shot that you’re trying to hit you’re going to start to hit your wedge shots much closer and you’re going to have much more opportunities with your putter to make birdies.[/showhide]
