The idea behind the new Great Big Bertha Epic Star family of
woods, hybrids and irons was to build upon the success of the original Epic brand by adding products geared primarily for slower-swinging players.

In addition to being endowed with the same technologies that have made that brand so popular, such as Jailbreak in the drivers and Speed Step in the fairways, the clubs also use ultra-light components such as Grand Bassara graphite shafts from Mitsubishi and J200 grips from Golf Pride so that golfers of that ilk can produce more power and speed when they hit their shots.

At the same time, technicians from Callaway Golf employed slimmed-down versions of other features from the initial Epic line. The Epic Star driver, for example, features a fixed hosel and an adjustable perimeter weight that is 6 grams less. And the fairway woods come with a triaxial carbon crown that is significantly lighter than steel – and that also allows technicians to increase moment of inertia for better forgiveness and position center of gravity for improved launch.

At 286 grams, the Epic Star driver is Callaway’s lightest, and it is sold in lofts of 10.5 and 12 degrees. As for the fairway woods bearing that appellation they come in 15-, 18- and 21-degree versions, which translate into 3-, 5- and 7-woods, respectively. There also are three options in the Epic Star hybrid collection – 18, 20 and 23 degrees – and these use a next-generation 455 Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup to deliver faster ball speeds on off-center hits as well as those balls struck on the sweet spot.
And the Epic Star irons, which employ a hollow hosel, run from 4-9 and also include PW, AW, GW and SW wedges.
