March 4, 2018 – Phil Mickelson – WGC Mexico Championship

By Ron Green Jr. of Global Golf Post

For weeks now, Mickelson has been talking about how his game has been trending in the right direction and on Saturday evening he said if he didn’t win this event, he was going to win again.

Shooting 66 on Sunday to overcome a two-stroke deficit starting the final round, Mickelson looked like the Mickelson of old, holing critical putts, making birdies when he needed them and even throwing some unnecessary drama into the proceedings with a wild bogey at the easy par-5 11th hole.

The victory was the 43rd in Mickelson’s PGA Tour career and among the most meaningful because of the nearly five-year drought since his 2013 Open Championship victory at Muirfield. In the ensuing years, Mickelson’s trust in his game has run high and low but he’s been insistent that his recent work with swing coach Andrew Getson was taking him where he wanted to go. It all came together in Mexico City.

“I can’t put into words how much this means to me,” Mickelson said.

Mickelson arrived in Mexico having finished in the top six in his previous three starts and beat one of the strongest fields of the year to win his third World Golf Championship.

Thomas was brilliant on the weekend, shooting 62-64 after figuring out a swing issue through remote video work with his father, Mike, after a frustrating first round. After winning the Honda Classic two Sundays ago, Thomas fell short in the playoff, bogeying the par-3 17th from behind the green.

England’s Tyrell Hatton was tied for the lead playing the 18th hole but made a bogey to finish T3 with Spain’s Rafa Cabrera-Bello, one stroke out of the playoff.
