It’s difficult to not be impressed with 21-year-old Aaron Wise, who can add his name to the list of emerging young talents on Tour.

It was only two years ago when Wise won the individual NCAA Championship and led the University of Oregon to the team title. He quickly parlayed that success into professional victories on the Mackenzie Tour (2016) and the Web.com Tour (2017). Now a PGA Tour rookie, Wise had put together five top-25 finishes heading into the Byron Nelson, including a tie for second at the Wells Fargo Championship earlier this month.

Coming into the final round of the Byron Nelson tied with Marc Leishman, the No. 16 player in the world and a three-time Tour winner, Wise had to wait until the late afternoon to start the final round as a four-hour rain delay pushed tee times back.

When things finally commenced, Wise looked in total control of his swing. Starting on No. 4, he made six birdies in a span of seven holes and gave himself as much as a four-stroke lead on the back nine.

He played intelligent golf down the final handful of holes, aiming away from the flag to avoid short-siding himself, sucking the life out of any comeback designs other pursuers had. He’s the youngest winner on Tour since Si Woo Kim won the Players Championship last May.

“It’s just a ton of self-belief,” Wise said. “I felt oddly calm all day long. To play bogey-free is just awesome.”

While Leishman secured a second-place finish, a trio of players made a strong push to reach a tie for third. Branden Grace (62), J.J. Spaun (63) and Keith Mitchell (63) all had great final rounds to reach 19 under.

Adam Scott finished T9, narrowly missing a chance to break into the top 60 in the world and earn a spot in the U.S. Open. He will have an opportunity to change his fortunes if he can crack the top 60 by the next cutoff date, which is June 11, the Monday of championship week.
